Like most our decisions, perception combines current evidence with a priori knowledge. Based on the spatial and temporal context in which a stimulus is delivered, expectations are generated, and plastic reorganization of brain networks may be triggered. However, the extent to which perception is ultimately affected varies within and across individuals. I will present experiments documenting this variability – before or after breakfast, in individuals with higher or lower autistic traits, and in patients with or without Alzheimer's Disease. I will discuss our attempts at investigating its origin using neuroimaging and pupillometric methods.
