PhD Program in Mind, Brain, and Human Thought

Program Coordinators:

  • Pietro Pietrini (PhD Program Coordinator)

  • Amos Bertolacci (Director of the HT Track)

  • Luca Cecchetti (Director of the NEPP Track)

The MBHT PhD program offers advanced, interdisciplinary training with an innovative approach to studying the human mind, thought, and behavior. By integrating neuroscience, psychology, philosophy of science, and the history of philosophy, the program provides methodological tools to analyze brain function, cognitive processes, and the historical and epistemological foundations of knowledge.

Program Structure

The program is divided into two complementary tracks:

  • Neuroscience, Experimental Psychology, and Psychophysiology (NEPP): Focuses on the neural and psychological mechanisms regulating human behavior and mental functions.

  • Human Thought: Philosophy, History, and Science (HT): Explores the philosophical, epistemological, and historical roots of scientific knowledge and human thought.

Through a combination of theoretical training and applied research, the program prepares PhD candidates to conduct innovative studies on the biological and cultural foundations of the human mind. The interdisciplinary approach promotes a non-reductionist perspective on the complexity of thought and behavior.

An International Research Environment

The MBHT PhD program is conducted in an international environment, with students from all over the world and faculty of the highest academic standing. The IMT School has an extensive network of academic and professional collaborations, facilitating the placement of its graduates in prestigious universities, policy-making institutions, and leading companies in research, technology, and mental health sectors.

English is the official language of the program. Additionally, the PhD program is supported by two research units, MoMiLab and PhiBor, which offer opportunities for in-depth study and collaboration on cutting-edge topics.
