Griffith Energy and Gamma-convergence approximation

The talk aims to introduce the main variational tools used in linear elasticity. In this talk we will introduce the Griffith energy, starting from the Mumford-Shah functional for image denoising. We will briefly discuss the space of functions with bounded deformation, on which it is naturally defined. Then we will discuss the notion of Gamma-convergence and we will explore the Ambrosio-Tortorelli approximation for the Mumford-Shah functional. Finally, starting from this, we will discuss the phase-field approximation of the Griffith energy: as the elastic counterpart of the Mumford-Shah functional.
