Marey and Muybridge: Science, Pseudo Science, Art

The names of Étienne Jules Marey and Edward James Muybridge are often linked together. Both used photography to study the movement of humans and animals at the end of the nineteenth century. Both are seen as pioneers of the scientific photography of locomotion. Beginning with the discovery of the photographic negatives of Marey more than thirty years ago in Paris, I will examine the the different aims, processes and outcomes of the photographic work of these two men.
