Workshop: ERC Grants for the Excellence of European Research

11 novembre 2015
Complesso di San Francesco, Cappella Guinigi
The European Research Council (ERC) - the first pan-European funding body for frontier research - was set up in 2007 under the EU's Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7, 2007-2013). The aim of the ERC is to enhance the dynamic character, creativity and excellence of European research at the frontiers of knowledge. Through peer-reviewed competitions, the best researchers are funded to perform their research in Europe. The ERC is now part of the first pillar 'Excellent Science' of Horizon 2020, the new EU Programme for Research and Innovation. The total budget allocated to the ERC for the period 2014-2020 is 13.1 billion euros. This workshop will provide an overview on opportunities and statistics of the ERC projects and some practical information for writing a successful ERC proposal. Moreover, it will offer a broad spectrum of useful information and experiences derived from success stories of ERC Principal Investigators. The Principal Investigators (PIs) of ERC Starting Grant and Advanced Grant projects affiliated to universities in Tuscany (IMT Institute for Advanced Studied Lucca, University of Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore and European University Institute of Florence) will present the key innovative ideas behind their projects. Their projects rang from Political Economy to the representation of literature through images, and from engineering and materials science to the study of human brain and its complexity, highlighting the ability of ERC to support frontier research in the entire spectrum of knowledge, with special emphasis on innovative and interdisciplinary research methodologies. The workshop is organized in collaboration with the European Research Council and APRE- Agency for the Promotion of the European Research.
